Identification of malodorous compounds in automotive coverstocks

The perception of air quality inside vehicular cabins is often associated with its odor. To minimize odor andimprove the consumer's experience, it is important to understand organic compounds outgassing from thematerials used inside the cabin. However, current odor tests provide no information about these compounds,limiting the ability to optimize the manufacturing process. Canadian General Tower (CGT) is a major Canadianmanufacturer of polymeric materials for automotive coverstocks, and is partnering with University of Torontoin this project to study volatile organic compound emissions. Prof. Chan's research group will use advancedanalytical tools and statistical analyses to determine compounds responsible for malodor. The results from thisstudy will be used to adjust CGT's manufacturing process to minimize odor and improve its globalcompetitiveness in the automotive market.
