Recently, running has increased in popularity. Thousands of Canadians regularly run each year, whether it is socially, for weightloss, healthy lifestyle, or competition. Running benefits heart and mental health and can help in maintaining a healthy weight. However, long-term running, especially distance running, can take a toll on the body causing immune system suppression, excessive muscle soreness and nutrient depletion. Even many social runners will have nutritional needs above and beyondsedentary individuals, making it difficult to obtain these nutrients through whole foods alone. The importance of supplementation inrunners is becoming increasingly clear. Simultaneously, the fitness supplement industry is rapidly expanding. An area of significantgrowth is that of amino acid supplementation to enhance performance and recovery. Interestingly, amino acid supplementationcurrently focuses on only a few amino acids and many supplements are marketed for use across various sports, despite significantdifferences in the metabolic requirements of these sports. Furthermore, most fitness supplements are designed and tested in eliteathletes, despite being marketed to the masses. It has been well documented that various supplements proven effective in an eliteathlete have little benefit for an intermediate competitor. Staterra is working to develop a cutting edge supplement specificallytailored to the needs of intermediate distance runners based on their amino acid kinetic profile. By determining the kinetic profile ofamino acids during a long-distance run as well as the immediate recovery period, we believe we can develop an amino acidsupplement to support performance and recovery of everyday runners.
