This work aims to visualize the rapid decompression of supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) in a channel. Further understanding of CO2 decompression is critical for the mitigation of long, ductile fractures associated with high-pressure CO2 pipelines. An existing shock tube facility in the lab will be modified to accommodate the proposed CO2 decompression tests. A high-speed schlieren photography system, using a Photron SA5 camera, will be used to photograph the event. Framing rates between 50-100 kHz are planned. High-speed piezoelectric sensors will be used to monitor gas pressure along the expansion tube upper wall surface. These sensors will provide key information on the decompression event. They will also be used to track expansion waves traveling upstream and help determine when the data acquisition period should be terminated. The experiments will provide key data needed to validate numerical models used to predict CO2 pipeline fracture events.
