The use of bioreactors (biological reactors) is pervasive in biological manufacturing, where the cultivation of**microorganisms is required for the production of antibiotics, vaccines, and biological theraputics. The**biological processes involved in bioreactors results in the design and scale-up of bioreactors presenting extreme**challenges in that they involve coupled multiphase multiphysics including mass transport, interphase mass**exchange, biological reaction, multiphase hydrodynamics, and**energy transport. Consequently, commercial-scale bioreactors are mainly batch reactors with relatively small**physical scales, compared to large-scale continuous reactors in traditional bulk chemicals industry.**Improvements in engineering design processes for bioreactors, specifically scale-up and optimization, are key**priorities in biological manufacturing. Scale-up of pilot-scale bioreactors for newly developed antibiotics and**vaccines would result in more rapidly bringing them to market, in addition to production in increased quantities**at lower costs. Within this context, this research project involves computational research for the optimization**and design of bioreactors used for vaccine production. This will be accomplished through the use of**cutting-edge multiphase models, numerical methods, and specialized expertise in the understanding of these**concepts.
