The research program proposed by Dr. Karoly Bezdek (U of C) belongs to the broad area of discrete (resp., computational) geometry. He proposes to continue the research work of his previous CRC term on topics such as separable ball packings, ball-polyhedra, and non-separable arrangements of convex bodies. On the other hand, he plans to work on fundamentally new research directions as well including crystallization via soft ball packings, combinatorial X-raying, and volumetric geometry of molecules. Along the way, a number of longstanding conjectures are targeted with a combination of methods from discrete, convex, and differential geometry, geometric analysis, and probability.*
