Fisheries exploitation has contributed to a growing conservation crisis. There are opportunities *for improving the sustainability of all fishing sectors (i.e., recreational, commercial, First Nations) *by working on common problems such as release mortality. Building on work conducted during *Cooke's first CRC, the proposed research efforts will focus on understanding the effects of *fisheries interactions on individual fitness and population-level processes . The Chair will apply *this knowledge to develop methods to reduce release mortality, providing partners with *innovative management and conservation strategies that will ensure that fisheries in Canada are *sustainable.
