Aercoustics Engineering Limited (Aercoustics) and Prof. Alis Ekmekci from the University of Toronto are**initiating a research collaboration to investigate wind-induced noise of perforated and slotted panels. Such**panels are very commonly used as architectural features on building facades and can have an adverse impact on**the local noise environment, both for the neighbouring community and for inhabitants of the building itself.**Wind passing through the openings of these panels is known to generate loud tonal noises, which have been**described as howling or humming. This has been observed on buildings such as One World Trade Centre in**New York City and Beetham Tower in Manchester, UK, where noise is reportedly heard up to 300 metres**away. With increased use of these panels by building architects and massive developments like the Agaoglu**Maslak 1453 in Istanbul, Turkey, where nearly every surface is covered in them, understanding the mechanisms**behind noise generation and developing cost-effective means to mitigate it are very valuable. This research will**investigate the interaction of the incident wind with various panel geometries, utilizing methodologies that**facilitate measurements of both noise and flow visualization in the UTIAS anechoic wind tunnel. Results will**provide insight into the underlying mechanisms of noise and the impacts of varying the geometry of the panel**openings. The research is not only important to the public and residents of these buildings, to which the noise is**an annoyance, but to the manufacturers and architects who implement them in designs. Aercoustics is a**specialized acoustic consulting firm that works extensively in the areas of architectural and environmental**noise. Understanding the aeroacoustics of architectural perforated panels through this collaboration will allow**them to provide more valuable and comprehensive services when doing architectural designs. Canada along**with many other countries has established environmental noise guidelines to control noise and ensure**communities and inhabited places are desirable for living. Outcomes of this research can only serve to help**reduce noise pollution and protect the noise environment in our cities.
