Communication is an essential part of everyday living. However, many people suffer from conditions and**deficits that render them unable to communicate directly with others. For these individuals, a trained**professional is often required to assist them continuously, which makes it impossible for them to live**independently. It also places a heavy financial and psychological burden on their families. Supported by the**previous ENGAGE grant, Cognixion and the UW team led by Dr. Jiang have worked together in the effort to**develop a platform that allows users to communicate non-verbally with the aid of state-of-the-art non-invasive**brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and smartphone technologies. Specifically, we will implement different**visual stimuli that can elicit brain signals with distinctive patterns. These patterns will be used to decode the**user's intention. Different stimulus parameters such as different flashing frequencies, color, and size will be**investigated. All implementation will be based on Cognixion's existing AR platform based on UNITY and iOS**environment, so it is most efficient to translate into Cognixion's next-generation product. We will also how the**effectiveness (i.e. the number of stimuli recognized by the algorithm) of such a BCI system changes in different**real-world environments that Cognixion's customer would be in.
