Communication is an essential part of everyday living. However, many people suffer from conditions anddeficits that render them unable to communicate directly to others. For these individuals, a trained professionalis often required to assist them continuously, which makes it impossible for them to live independently. It alsoplaces a heavy financial and psychological burden on their families. This project aims at developing a systemwith which these individuals can communicate with their loved ones using only their thoughts, through atechnology called brain-computer interface. Their intentions will be decoded from their brain waves orelectroencephalogram (EEG), allowing them to control external devices. The research team will focus on aspecific EEG modality called Steady State Visual Evoked Potential (SSVEP) in this project, and mechanismswill be developed to provide individualized optimal electrode positions for this SSVEP-based BCI system thatis commercially viable.
