Nearly all animals require a steady supply of oxygen. Oxygen limitation which can arise clinically or in many extreme environments in nature can be catastrophic to normal cellular function. And yet, some unique species of mammals, birds, and fish thrive in environments where oxygen is scarce. The proposed research will elucidate how the physiology of these species is unique compared to most others, and how cellular and mitochondrial function is maintained during oxygen deprivation. It will thus elucidate natures solutions to an important clinical and environmental problem.
