Intelligent Vehicles (IVs) via connectivity and automation present a unique opportunity to address key urban issues including congestion, long travel-times, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and pollution. Earlier, we proposed a distributed traffic management system (Patent: 62/865,725) that takes advantage of IV technology to address these issues. It proposed a network based solution that is not dependent on users or crowdsourcing and have been shown in simulation to reduce congestion, travel times, GHG, and pollution while improving the throughput of downtown Toronto road network. In this project, we operationalize the necessary hardware and software stack and analyze the system on a real testbed in Hamilton, Ontario. The project will enable us to take the research developed in our lab, create a real proof-of-concept implementation, and demonstrate its performance in terms of the above mentioned issues. We will also evaluate the scalability, robustness, and fault-tolerance of the system. This project will result in very high value for Canada in terms of intellectual property, economic competitiveness, innovative technologies, climate change, and job creation.
