The population dynamics of infectious diseases may place new limitations on how the oceans feed humanity. Global fisheries landings ceased increasing decades ago, fuelling a rapidly growing gap between seafood demand and ocean fisheries. The blue revolution is transforming many coastal seas into areas of intensive aquaculture production, which has potential to relieve fishing pressure and provide sustainable seafood. However, infectious diseases have emerged that challenge aquaculture industries and may contribute to the decline of marine ecosystems and fisheries. This research will study the emergence and dynamics of marine infectious diseases in order to sustain coastal ecosystems and our seafood.
