Mitigating global climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions requires international collaboration. Canada and Germany face similar challenges to eliminate emissions from fossil fuel combustion, but differences in resource endowment, energy security, economic activity, and infrastructure requirements provide an opportunity to leverage each country's strengths. This project develops a new research partnership between the Institute for integrated Energy Systems (IESVic) at the University of Victoria in Canada and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology (IPK) in Germany. Both organisations bring extensive experience in the areas of energy technology and model-based systems engineering. Via a series of workshops, meetings, and joint publications, research teams from both organisations will share methods and knowledge on state-of-the-art energy system modelling. Focus of research is the integration of hydrogen produced via electrolysis. Hydrogen can be used to store and transport renewable energy, and to create synthetic materials that replace petroleum products. Over a one-year period, the partners will develop modelling tools that help identify cost-effective applications for hydrogen, and support evidence based policy making that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in both countries.
