Quantum technologies that can fundamentally change and enhance our ability to measure, compute, and communicate are projected to be realized within a decade. In the same way that classical information technology has been greatly augmented by being connected over networks, so will quantum devices be enabled by the development of quantum networks. Such networks, however, rely on technology that has not yet fully been developed. Quantum memory is a central missing component and a key research focus in my lab. The research program in this Discovery Grant proposal aims to build on my lab's research expertise in quantum memory to focus on developing compact and integrated quantum memory devices, which meet the core specification in order to be useful in quantum networks. The principal projects making up this program are the development of three scalable quantum memory material platforms: one which utilizes compact optics in a well understood configuration and two which involve nano-fabrication. The importance of pursuing different approaches is both to offset risk, but also to gain both short-term and long-term outcomes in proportion to the complexity and novelty of the different approaches. The proposed program will boost Canadian quantum network efforts, which will come front and center with the launch of the Canadian quantum satellite in a few years. By developing a portable and practical quantum memory my lab will be poised to become a central player in large national and international collaborations and thus further ensure Canada's role in global quantum networks. In addition, the rapid expansion of quantum focused businesses has created a large demand in HQP in the field. Thus, the HQP trained through this program will gain sought-after skills and provide a work-force which can attract and support business and research in the quantum technology sector in Canada.
