We are a synthetic organic chemistry laboratory and are internationally recognized experts in the art of manipulating carbon-containing molecules. We develop new chemical reactions and strategically transform molecules with certain characteristics into new molecules with different properties. 1. Synthesis of Novel Benzosilole Chromophores. Fluorescent chromophores are molecules that glow or give off light when irradiated with invisible ultraviolet (or "black") light. They are critical for many technologies in everyday life, including electronics, medical diagnostics, and even laundry detergents that bring extra whiteness to T-shirts. We use advanced organic chemistry to prepare novel benzosilole chromophores that contain silicon atoms with exciting new properties for commercial applications. Our experience with investigating structure-activity relationships (SARs) of drugs influences our synthetic planning in the systematic optimization of chromophores. 2. Reactions of Strained Donor-acceptor Carbocyles. A carbon atom is generally in one of three configurations when bonded. We make small rings with just three or four carbon atoms, in which the distorted bond angle increases strain and facilitates ring opening, and we then intercept the breakage with complementary molecules to create new chemical entities. We combine molecules in novel ways and reveal new synthetic methods, which are the cornerstone of drug discovery, pharmaceuticals, and specialty chemicals. EDI and HQP Training. My carefully crafted HQP training strategy revolves around the framework of synthetic organic chemistry. All HQP are expected to respect a fair and inclusive work environment, participate in activities that foster professional growth, and fully support the learning and engagement of others within the group and in the broader community. My HQP acquire technical skills in synthetic chemistry and translational skills in: writing, data and time management, teamwork, public speaking, etc. The advanced chemistry skills that I foster in my HQP build upon understanding the broadest aspects of synthetic organic chemistry, which not only make them particularly desired by employers in pharmaceutical and related chemical manufacturing industries, but also provide them with a valuable transferable skill set in the age of silo education. My HQP have published important research results, earned awards and scholarships, and secured positions in academia, research labs, and pharmaceutical industries. Impact. The research produced by my diverse group of HQP benefits society in the long term by helping develop new chemical entities and processes, and these contributions will make medications more easily accessible and more economical to manufacture. We are also at the forefront of creating novel materials to open doors to and pave the way for projected high-tech applications towards a green economy.
