Canada is investing massively in public transport infrastructure to support sustainable transport systems across the country. The benefits associated with public transport investments are intrinsically linked to the environment in which they are implemented, notably with respect to land use systems and active transport infrastructure. To capitalize on these investments and ensure a substantial mode shift from private car to public and active transport, Canadians need to learn from experiences around the world that have succeeded in supporting sustainable mobility through integrated land use and transport planning. The Netherlands has been pioneering integrated land use and transport planning. Its success lies mainly in a coordinated planning strategy that integrates transit-oriented development together with an extensive cycling network. Therefore, the goal of the proposed project is to collaborate with experts from the Netherlands to develop methodological approaches to measure the performance of public transport networks, considering the interactions between public transport, land use, and cycling infrastructure. Using a set of complementary land use, transport and bikeability indicators, this project will seek to classify and characterize public transport station areas in the Canadian context, based on the planning approaches implemented in the Netherlands. A comparative analysis between Rotterdam and Montreal will be conducted to learn from the best practices from the Netherlands. By developing a strong collaboration with a Dutch research group, this project will contribute to developing a cutting-edge Canadian expertise and transforming the transport engineering practice in Canada. The project will train highly qualified personnel that will learn and share how to successfully bridge the gap between land use and transport planning. It will support the effective implementation of public transport systems in Canadian metropolitan regions, thereby contributing to Canada's economic development and climate change efforts, while improving the quality of life and social inclusion of Canadians.
