Significant advances in battery technology are driving a massive transformation of the energy sector, enabling the cost-effective deployment of stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS) to increase the penetration of intermittent renewable sources into the power grid, reduce electricity costs, and allow fast-charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs). BESS technologies will also transform the energy security of Canada's northern/remote Indigenous communities that rely mostly on diesel-generated energy systems. Canada is well positioned to accelerate BESS adoption as it makes major strides towards its national emission targets in its fight against climate change. We have partnered with eCAMION, a leading Canadian BESS manufacturer, to jointly develop a novel digital-physical framework for BESS that combines physics- and data-based hierarchical thermal modelling methodologies, design optimization, and cost-effective characterization of beginning-of-life and lifecycle battery performance. We will leverage this framework to demonstrate the next generation of modular BESS suitable for the extreme hot/cold climate of Canada's urban and northern/remote regions, while maintaining superior performance, enhanced safety, and extended lifetime. Placing environmental and social issues at the forefront, we will bring a paradigm shift in the thermal design and optimization of BESS by combining engineering and social considerations at the earliest stage of battery design and by working with social scientists and northern/remote Indigenous communities to enrich our models. eCAMION will incorporate this Alliance project's innovations into its products and test and distribute them through its established network in Canada and globally. Canada will benefit economically and socially from the resulting fault-tolerant and climate-proof BESS technology, which will help accelerate the use of EVs, decrease emission-generating energy sources, provide reliable energy storage for renewable energy in northern/remote Indigenous communities, and help our country achieve its public targets for emission reductions.
