This project aims to develop an innovative deposition process to protect, manufacture and repair high-value parts in a more eco-responsible and sustainable manner. Applications will be found in the aerospace, surface transportation and biomedical sectors as well as in other industry sectors important for the Canadian economy and society. The innovative Liquid Accelerated Cold Spray (LACS) process uses water as a propellant liquid instead of a high volume of gas such as nitrogen or helium. The process involves forming a high-speed water jet in which we inject metallic powders that are accelerated at speeds higher than 0.5 km/s before impacting on the part to be coated or manufactured. Due to their high speed, the metallic particles are deformed upon impact and welded to the surface. Water being much denser than gases, it can accelerate particles more efficiently permitting a reduction of cost and usage of resources.Experts in surface engineering, fluid mechanics, modeling and process control are joining their forces to bring this technology to a higher level of maturity and take it closer to commercialization.
