This collaborative project between BlackBerry and the University of Waterloo (UW) aims to develop novel methods and technologies to engineer cybersecure safety-critical control systems suitable for practical application in Automated Vehicles (AVs) and Connected AVs (CAVs). Traditionally, in the automotive engineering field, AV/CAV control systems are developed without direct consideration of cybersecurity. Given that expertise in each of safety-critical systems engineering and cybersecurity are in short supply, requiring talent in both safety and security engineering together would exacerbate the challenges. We will improve the state-of-the-art for cybersecure controls engineering through practical technologies to counter AV/CAV cybersecurity threats in a way that maximally isolates functional safety issues from these concerns. The project will deliver a practical formulation of the AV/CAV control design problem, given well-motivated and realistic cybersecurity threat models. It will generate a comparative assessment of multiple architectures, and technical solution approaches for engineering effective and isolatable cybersecurity into safety-critical controls. First, we will survey, identify, advance, and compare various control schemes and architectures that can deal with cyberattacks, particularly those based on model predictive control or MPC theory. We will use the findings and results from this step to develop a novel safe, secure and modular MPC design technique for AV/CAVs to counter unexpected, extreme, and intentional events like malicious cyberattacks, in addition to deterministic uncertainties and known disturbances. We will demonstrate the effectiveness of the new technique with an AV/CAV control design case study. This project will deliver innovations to improve cybersecurity and safety in AV/CAVs and BlackBerry expects Canadian vehicle manufacturers and equipment suppliers to begin using these new advancements in the production of future safe and secure AV/CAVs and components. This project will help Canada secure critical infrastructure, build cybersecurity and AV/CAV leadership, including future leaders through a pool of talented HQP, and enhance the competitiveness of our industries on the global stage.
