MATERIALS AND METHODSCharacteristic examples of 16 Spitz nevi, 15 compound nevi, and 20 malignant melanomas with vertical growth phase were chosen randomly from patient files in the Section of Dermatopathology, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The specimens had been received for pathologic diagnosis in formalin and routinely processed into paraffin blocks. None of the Spitz or compound nevi had a microscopically dysplastic component. The melanomas were all in vertical growth phase, either Clark’s level III or IV [22].
