We examined relations among self-report measures and outcomes of drug use among 739 young adults. Purposes of the study included (a) partitioning measures of drug use frequency, quantity, disruptive substance use (in the workplace and school), and problem use in a multitrait-multimethod framework using latent-variable confirmatory analysis;(b) testing whether drug use frequency and quantity were interchangeable, equally powerful predictors of problem drug behaviors;(c) evaluating whether higher order constructs explained associations among the latent variables, once specific drug use was controlled; and (d) examining the relations between negative drug consequences (arrests and accidents) and the latent variables. Results supported the construct validity of the hypothesized latent factors. Although highly correlated, Drug Use Frequency and Drug Use Quantity were not interchangeable: Quantity was a more powerful predictor of disruptive and problem drug use. A second-order factor of General Drug Use and Abuse accounted for the first-order constructs. Differences between adolescent and young-adult drug use and policy implications are discussed. There is widespread concern about the use and abuse of alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, and other hard drugs by adolescents and young adults. Such concern exists within the research community, among employers and school administrators, and in the general population. National surveys indicate that use of such substances, especially alcohol and marijuana, is highly prevalent among today's high school adolescents (Johnston, O'Malley, & Bachman, 1986) and young adults (Miller etal., 1983). Heavy or frequent use of drugs by adolescents may be considered de facto evidence for abuse inasmuch as such behaviors may interfere with the development of critical coping skills that are necessary for their success as adults (eg, Newcomb, 1987; Newcomb & Bentler, 1988). Also, use of such substances, including alcohol, is illegal for teenagers. Donovan and Jessor (1983) found that problem drinking was a better indicator of greater drug involvement by teenagers than was use of marijuana, an illicit substance. On a Guttman scale (1944) of drug involvement, adolescent problem drinkers placed further along a continuum of greater drug involvement than did marijuana users who also drank alcoholic beverages. In addition, problem drinking was associated with a tendency to engage in other problem behaviors (eg, Donovan & Jessor, 1985). However, there is less known about drug use among young
