Accumulated evidence suggests that testosterone enhances sexual motivation in both men and women. Hormone replacement studies in hypogonadal men and in ovariectomized women suggest that, above a certain threshold, increased quantities of testosterone are behaviorally irrelevant in both sexes. The observation that sexual motivation in females is enhanced by levels of testosterone much below those required for normal sexual interest in men raises the possibility of a difference in neural sensitivity to testosterone. An alternative explanation for such findings, based on the evidence that changes in levels of hormones may be more important for behavior than absolute levels, is proposed.
