Developmental mode varies widely in most animal phyla. These differences in developmental strategy exert a profound influence on the ecology and evolution of closely related species. The mechanistic ulterations in ontogeny that lead to switches in developmental mode are coming under increasing scrutiny. Echinoids are one of the Gestunderstood groups in this regard. Parallel modifications in direct-developing echinoids point to some of the key changes in oogenesis and embryogenesis that produce switches in developmental mode.A remarkable feature of many animal life histories is the presence of a feeding larval stage that is morphologically distinct from the adult. The wide diversity of metazoan larval forms is a response to the challenges of reproduction and dispersal. A developmental strategy based on feeding larvae permits an organism to produce numerous offspring by placing the nutritional burden of development on the next generation. Although this indirect mode of development is widespread among animals, most clades also contain species that lack feeding larvae and instead undergo direct development’,*. Among marine invertebrates, developmental mode has an important influence on autecology, modes of selection, and rates of speciation and extinction3-5. Species with planktotrophic, indirect development spawn prodigious numbers of gametes and produce larvae capable of wide dispersa14, 5. Broad distribution increases the chance that some larvae will find suitable
