Colloidal Forces Involved in Steric Stabilization of Latex

利用全内反射显微镜（TIRM）检测颗粒动态相互作用，利用小角光散射（SALS）测定絮凝速率，研究聚合物吸附对模型胶体颗粒的影响。将对基于两种测量的预测进行比较，并获得有关粒子间力的基本方面。TIRM以前是由作者开发的。动态条件下的TIRM测量将与原子力显微镜（ATM）在平衡条件下的测量结果进行比较。如果成功，该研究将提高对范德华力和分散力的基本理解，并立即应用于胶体稳定性的评估和聚合物大分子包覆胶体颗粒的生产。

The effect of polymer adsorbtion on model colloid particles will be investigated using total internal reflection microscopy (TIRM) to detect particle dynamic interactions and small-angle light scattering (SALS) to determine the flocculation rate. Comparison between the predictions based on the two measurements will be made, and fundamental aspects concerning interparticle forces will be obtained. TIRM was previously developed by the author. The TIRM measurements in dynamic conditions will be compared to those performed with the atomic force microscope (ATM) in equilibrium conditions. If successful, the research will improve fundamental understanding of the van der Waals and dispersion forces, with immediate application to evaluation of colloidal stability and production of colloidal particles coated with polymeric macromolecules.
