The research proposed involved continuing studies of photochemical and transition metal catalyzed cyclization reactions, including alkyne-vinylcyclopropane, alkene-vinylcyclopropane, allene-vinylcyclopropane, dienylcyclopropane (5+2) cycloadditions and alkene-vinylcyclobutanone (6+2) cycloadditions. Emphasis will be placed on developing a fundamental understanding of the metal catalyzed reactions, including scope, selectivities, rates, and mechanisms. With this renewal award, the Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry Program provides continuing support for the research of Dr. Paul A. Wender of the Department of Chemistry at Stanford University. The research involves the development of synthetic methods for preparing organic compounds containing rings and asymmetric carbon centers, with potential uses in medicine and biology. The work will provide valuable training to graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in organic synthesis, structure, and mechanism.
