New Organic Molecules with Unusual Structures and Properties

The focus of this research is the preparation of bowl-shaped polyarenes by the use of flash vacuum pyrolysis. The target molecules include a number of `fullerene fragments` and `bucky tubes.` Studies on the targets to assess bowl-to-bowl inversion barriers and the acid-base chemistry of the concave surfaces of the molecules will also be conducted. With this renewal award, the Organic and Macromolecular Chemistry Program is supporting the research of Dr. Lawrence T. Scott of the Department of Chemistry at Boston College. Professor Scott will focus his work on the molecular design, synthesis and study of polyarenes that adopt unusual bowl-shaped molecular geometries resembling those of fullerene surfaces. The remarkable ability of of this class of compounds to temporarily store electrons has stimulated interest in possible use as new materials for light-weight batteries.
