We propose to test a hypothesis explaining that settlement and onshore transport rates of some Southern California nearshore invertebrates should decrease in El Ni¹o conditions. Species affected would be those depending on internal motions for onshore transport. The hypothesis links thermocline structure, larval vertical distribution, and onshore transport. To test the hypothesis' predictions, we propose a monitoring program off Southern California and Northern Baja California. The observational program includes (a) three cruises for assessing larval distribution, (b) weekly monitoring of barnacle settlement at four nearshore locations spread along 100 km of coastline, and (c) temperature monitoring with nearshore moorings at the same locations.
