A Seminar on Academic Careers in Chemistry

This project, supported in the Analytical and Surface Chemistry Program and the Office of Multidisciplinary Activities, supports a seminar for about forty graduate students and postdoctoral students that aims to prepare them for initiating careers in teaching at the college and university level. Professor Carr of the University of Minnesota and a group of faculty from diverse institutions will present this seminar at the November 1998 Eastern Analytical Symposium Meeting in New Jersey. The long-term objective of this project is to make future college and university teachers more fully aware of the opportunities and responsibilities that will accompany this career choice so that they will be more successful. Following this seminar students will have access to an email network that will bolster their morale and provide peer support as new challenges are encountered on-the-job. Of particular interest will be attracting women and minorities to teaching careers and increasing their retention rates in the teaching profession.
