CAREER: Experimental Mechanics and Modeling of Interactive Solids and Structures

The proposed research consists of work to characterize and model thebehavior of nonclassical materials exhibiting strong multi-fieldinteractions. In particular, recent experiments of certain shape memoryalloys has shown strain localization and subtle thermo-mechanicalinteractions, for which no definitive models are yet available. The scopeof these experiments will be extended to include cyclic loading,multi-axial loading, and higher strain rates. The objective will be todevelop thermodynamically based models that admit the possibility ofunstable mechanical behavior consistent with these experiments. Theeducational component of this work will foster undergraduate and graduatestudents' awareness of these non-classical materials through design/buildprojects and new offered classes.
