Interference management in cellular networks with a special focus on the comparison between cooperative and non-cooperative methods

Intercell interference (ICI) is the strongest effect limiting the performance of today’s cellular networks. Although, ICI is generated by other man-made devices using the same network, it cannot be controlled easily. State-of-the-art methods handling ICI drastically reduce the possible data rates of the network and new proposed methods often lack implementability.It is discussed intensely, whether cooperative multi-point (CoMP) techniques should be included in future standards. Cooperation of the base stations in a network promises a large gain in data rate. But, cooperation does not always improve the possible rates of a system, it can minder these rates if the required exchange of information for the cooperation becomes too large. This proposal focusses on ICI mitigating strategies with an optimum trade-off between the benefits and the cost of cooperation.In a framework especially designed for comparing cooperative and non-cooperative techniques, which includes the drawbacks of cooperation, optimal non-cooperative strategies shall be found and the maximal possible gain of cooperation shall be characterized. Beneficial types of cooperation shall be identified and, finally, new cooperative methods, which provide the proposed trade-off, shall be found.
