EIA-0072744Bohringer, KarlUniversity of WashingtonCISE Postdoctoral Associates in Experimental Computer Science: ProbingNeural Substrates of BehaviorThe focus of our multi-disciplinary research program is the development oftools and techniques for multisite intracellular recording in freelybehaving animals. More specifically, we are involved in amulti-investigator effort to implant a microcomputer into the brain of amarine mollusk, for the purpose of recording neuronal signals. This effortcomprises three main thrusts: (1) to develop silicon microcomputers thatcan record from, and communicate with, multiple neurons in an intactanimal; (2) to develop multi-site intracellular probe arrays, and thetechniques for attaching these arrays to nervous tissue without damagingeither probes or tissue; and (3) to develop neurophysiological preparationsand techniques for surgically implanting both microchips and probe arraysin live, freely behaving animals, and for recording from these animals intheir natural environment for several hours.
