The constant enhancements in capabilities of palmtop, embedded andwearable devices, together with the advent of pervasive connectivity, represents a new paradigm for interaction among devices. A new vistais open for research in the area of mobile data management wheremobile devices gather and exchange information from not just wiredsources, but also their environment and one another. Each device isboth a data source and a data consumer pursuing its individual andcollective tasks. New ideas are proposed for a research program aimedat realizing ubiquitous computing systems based on the cooperation ofautonomous, dynamic and adaptive components (hardware as well assoftware) which are located in vicinity of one another. This issignificantly different from ``infrastructure-based'' mobileclient/server computing between PDAs and network services. Theproposed research will enable a new class of applications thateffectively exploit mobility and pervasive computing. New prototypesand applications will be built in the context of mobile informationmanagement within dynamic communities of ad-hoc services anddevices. The research team is part of the eBiquity research grouplocated at The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) andwill closely interact with collaborators from industry including IBM,Fujitsu, and HP.
