The principal objective of the Gordon Research Conference on NuclearChemistry is to provide the international community of nuclearscientists with a unique forum in which the most recent developmentsand results in this field can be presented, extensively discussedand criticized. A prime objective of this conference is to ensurethat discussions are conducted in a manner that will invite vigorousand open interactionsbetween scientists and provke new, andsometimes speculative, ideas for future research Generous time isallocated for such discussions and the site location and conferenceactivities successfully promote their occurrence. The proposed goals require the participation of a signifcant numberof the leaders in this field. These include both internationallrecognized senior scientists from around the world and the young andrising stars. The participation of younger scientists is essentialto address the future manpowwer needs of this rapidly changingfield. Therefore, bright and promising postdoctoral researchers andgraduate students have been specially selected for participation inthis conference and encouraged to present their ideas. Theirparticipation in this conference provides them with unique andextensive access to the leaders in their field, exposes them to newresearch opportunities and techniques and helps prepare them for theleadership roles they will assume in the future.The conference will examine various topics of current interest innuclear structure and reactions, including unstable nuclei, phasetransitions and critical point symmetries, spectroscopy, massmeasurements, and the use of radioactive ion beams.
