ITR: Science on the Semantic Web -- Prototypes in Bioinformatics

This medium ITR project will develop a framework to facilitate scienceresearch and education on the semantic web, and will implement andevaluate prototype tools and applications for use in the biocomplexityand biodiversity domains. These capabilities include the ability tocollaborate and convey meaning through the automatic andsemi-automatic semantic annotation of web documents; to improveinformation retrieval using background knowledge and inference; and toextract and fuse information from multiple, heterogeneous sources inresponse to a query. A testbed for prototyping these capabilities willbe the web portal of the National Biological InformationInfrastructure (http://www.nbii.org/). The framework will includespecifications for ontologies, protocols, agents, and tools forauthoring, automated ingest, and annotation. These tools will leveragecollaboratively constructed ontologies to bring diverse communitiestogether and enable community construction of scientificknowledge. Additional domain-independent, general purpose ontologieswill be developed to enable metadata about the contents and structureof databases and other knowledge repositories to be expressed inemerging knowledge markup languages such as RDF and OWL. This willenable agents to both access and index the hidden web, and will alsosupport the data mining of diverse and distributed databases.
