This grant will allow the Institute of Statistics and Decision Sciences(ISDS) at Duke University to purchase equipment for a high-speedcomputing cluster which will be dedicated to support research incomputational statistical sciences. It will be used for five projectsspecifically directed at developing statistical methodology for complex,high-dimensional hierarchical models using distributed computingenvironments. Specific research problems involve sequential importancesampling in latent variable models, combinatorial search for data miningapplications, adaptive stochastic search for high dimensional modelspaces, multivariate nonparametric function estimation, and multivariatespatial-temporal modeling. These problems, which are typical ofapplications in many scientific disciplines, require substantialcomputational power, in both speed and memory, and require development ofnew methodology for efficient implementations in modern distributedcomputing environments. Modern statistical methodology has allowed researchers to propose morecomplex and realistic models for many scientific problems, however, powerful computing environments and sutiable methodology are necessaryto make progress as larger datasets become available. This grant willallow the Institute of Statistics and Decision Sciences (ISDS) at DukeUniversity to purchase a high-speed computing cluster, dedicated tosupport research in computational statistical sciences. Projectsinclude spatio-temporal models to integrate information at multiplelevels, with applications in climate change and ecology, new classes ofmodels for identifying protein biomarkers for early cancer detection, novel algorithms for exploring high-dimensional collections of modelsand combining them, new techniques for modern data mining, and efficientmethodology for sequential analysis of data collected over time. Theseare all areas at the forefront of statistics with broad applicability towidespread problems in the statistics, science and beyond. The proposedcomputing system will be both extensible and upgradeable. Servinginitially the five projects, it will also provide for future expansionas these projects evolve and generate new directions in collaborativeresearch involving the primary investigators. The proposed researchwill have significant immediate impact on education through involvementof Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers directly in the proposedresearch, and incorporation of results into graduate courses at DukeUniversity. Results will be disseminated to the statistical and broaderscientific communities via software distributed on the web, direct collaborationwith researchers in other disciplines, conference presentations, andpapers to be published in academic journals.
