EMSW21-MCTP: Penn State MASS Program

Penn State's MASS program (Mathematics Advanced StudySemesters) is an intensive, semester-long activity forundergraduates recruited from around the country, which isintegrated with a summer undergraduate research activity.MASS is designed to provide a unique and mutuallyreinforcing blend of learning and research activities forits participants. Its goal is to guarantee the successfultransition of its participants from undergraduate tograduate study in mathematics.The main components of MASS are: three custom-designed corecourses in topics chosen from algebra, analysis andgeometry; individual student research projects; the MASScolloquium - a weekly lecture series by visitingmathematicians and occasionally distinguished Penn Statefaculty; and a weekly two-hour interdisciplinary seminar runby the director of the MASS program. MASS participantsacquire the experience and confidence they need to succeedin graduate school. In this way MASS program will increasethe number of students destined for careers in mathematics.The present project will support the operation of the MASSprogram for a five year period, and will incorporate thefollowing new elements: the program's size will be expandedand the program will target talented students not previouslycommitted to mathematics with attractive support packages.
