AST-0507328Desmond HillierUniversity of PittsburghSpectroscopic Analysis of Objects with non-Spherical EnvelopesABSTRACTThe development of a sophisticated multi-dimensional non-local thermodynamic equilibrium codefor the transfer of radiation through objects where geometry is important will be continued. Suchobjects (binary stars, novae, supernovae, Be stars, T Tauri stars, etc.) have been extensivelyobserved from both the ground and space and this code will provide an important diagnostic tool ofabundances and physical parameters. Towards this end, several activities are planned to furtherimprove and generalize the program: 1) a refinement of the current numerical techniques for greaterspeed and accuracy; 2) the implementation of the code in a parallel environment (exploring variouspossible parallelization routes); and 3) applying the code to real astrophysical objects (specificallyBe stars, rapidly rotating hot stars, and luminous blue variables) as a method of testing as well asextracting useful scientific results.The training and support for a postdoctoral fellow in modeling radiative transfer is included. This isan area with few students despite its importance throughout astronomy.The final code will be released to the public.
