This project provides funds to partially support a research conferencefocusing on several related important topics in nonparametricinference and probability, with applications to science. Theconference is planned to be held in Ann Arbor at the University ofMichigan, September 10-11, 2005. It will highlight challenges anddevelopments in biased sampling and missing data, shape-restrictedinference, contemporary sequential analysis, and modern nonparametricinference, probability, and statistics in biology and physical sciences.Statistical inference, the science of learning from data, has alwayshad an interdisciplinary focus, and as statistics and related areas ofapplication evolve and move forward, there is an ongoing need to sharedevelopments and new ideas across related disciplines. This conferenceat the interface of statistics and the sciences will promote thistransfer of knowledge allowing researchers in these related fields toshare ideas and learn from one another. The conference will also havebroader impacts, allowing young and leading researchers to interactand exchange ideas, promoting collaboration, broadening the scope ofapplications, and contributing to further developments in these areas.
