Workshop on Modeling the Rapid Evolution of Infectious Diseases

The objective of the workshop is focus on the evolution and transmissionof pathogenic microbes in models of infectious diseases. Becausepathogenic agents may evolve rapidly, have varied mechanisms oftransmission, and involve complex treatment strategies, researchers from avariety of fields are necessary to understand and control infectiousdiseases. The contributions of researchers in mathematical models ofepidemics is important in this effort. This workshop provides a forum forleading researchers in the subject of mathematical models of epidemics toexchange ideas, explore new methods, and discuss future directions withexperts in epidemiology and public health. The workshop greatly benefitsresearchers and their graduate students at universities in Canada and theUnited States. In recent years mathematical models have been widely used to studyemerging infectious diseases. Infectious diseases are a vital concern tosociety, and mathematical modeling allows the design of epidemic controlstrategies and the development of effective vaccines. Mathematicalinsights also help in understanding and predicting the emergence ofantibiotic and antiviral drug resistance, and suggest new therapeuticstrategies to better address these important public health concerns. Theoutbreak of SARS in Asia and Canada in 2003, the increasing number of AIDScases worldwide, and the recent resurgence of tuberculosis in Canada andthe United States all demonstrate the urgency and importance of thisresearch.
