0555806ShrumThis dissertation enhancement award supports Dr. Wesley M. Shrum and Mr. Richard B. Duque, Louisiana State University for work with Dr. Omar A. Barriga, University of Concepcion in Chile on a study of the relationship between scientific communication and productivity in Chilean science, focusing on the role of adopting new communication and information technologies, such as the Internet. Their study will be the first to address a Latin American research community within a global scientific and developmental context. It will address theoretical issues in science and technology studies (STS), the institutionalization of global science, and the diffusion of technology. This project will lead to the Ph.D. of a young U.S. researcher, while engaging him in an international research experience. The student will also be working with young post-graduate students in Chile, seeding future collaborations as he acts as a mentor and role model. The project itself will further understanding of the risks and potentials associated with the Internet and the global communities that produce knowledge. Dissemination of the results will aid decision-makers and policy analysts with an assessment of the impact of the Internet on increasing collaboration and scholarly productivity.
