In this award, funded by the Experimental Physical Chemistry Program of the Chemistry Division, Prof. Terry W. Gullion of the University of West Virginia, and his post-doctoral and graduate student colleagues will develop solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance methods (REAPDOR) to measure the dipolar coupling between dipolar -coupled spin pairs: S=1/2 and I=3/2, 7/2. The results from Prof. Gullion's research are expected to be of broad interest, as they will allow scientists to determine internuclear distance data for a much larger group of elements. These methods will be useful for structural characterization of materials (peptides, proteins, amorphous polymers and inorganic glasses) for which other methods of structure determination are not applicable.Besides the broader scientific and technological impacts of the research being supported, Prof. Gullion will continue to train young scientists in modern magnetic resonance methods development.
