With support from the Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Acquisition Program, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale will obtain a 300 MHz solid state probe. The research supported by this instrumentation includes the synthesis and characterization of a variety of new materials, including organic thin films, metal phosphonates containing charge-transfer complexes, solid-state host-guest materials, soluble semi-conducting group(IV) metal backbone polymers, nanoparticles for catalysis, fluorescent sensors, and nanowires. The instrumentation will also support research activities in the biological aspects of chemistry. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is the most broadly used tool available to chemists for the elucidation of the structure of molecules. It is used to identify unknown substances and to provide information on the arrangement and connectivity of atoms in molecules. This award will allow researchers to study solid materials by this technique. It will strengthen the organic, inorganic and biological materials research activities of the Department of Chemistry. The NMR instrumentation will be used by faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students in their research and it will be incorporated into experiments in undergraduate lab courses.
