0653773ChenThis exploratory project is to develop self-assembled protein nanostructures with novel functions and seeks a basic understanding of the principles governing their design, self-assembly, stability, and functionality. Cellulosome, a multi-protein nanostructure (18 nm), is an active nanosystem naturally made by certain anaerobic microbes for assimilating recalcitrant cellulose. This self-assembled system brings multiple enzymes in the proximity of the substrate (cellulose) and provides a structure that ensures a high local concentration and correct ratio/orders of its components, thereby maximizing the synergy and enhancing the catalytic efficiency. This project is to use cellulosome as a design template to build novel and multifunctional protein nanostructures.
