REU Site: Software Safety: Methodology, Practice and Research

This funding renews a successful CISE Research Experiences forUndergraduates (REU) site at the University of Texas at Dallas.This site focuses on Software Engineering research related toSoftware Safety. Students will evaluate the strengths andweakness of existing methodologies and current practices forsafety assurance, as well as investigating issues such as howthe introduction of software safety requirements may affectthe software lifecycle and how software processes, methodsand tool support should be adjusted. In addition to research,students will take field trips to industrial partners and attendmentoring workshops on technical writing and oral presentation.This REU site will allow students, especially those fromunderrepresented groups or universities with limited researchopportunities, to experience cutting-edge research in softwaresafety --- critical to the prevention of catastrophic accidentsand safe operation of software-dependent systems. It will alsoencourage these students to continue into graduate programs andcareers in science and technology research. Students will gainproficiency in a broadly applicable skill set including oraland written communication, research methods, critical thinking,and problem solving.
