Multi-particle quantum correlations in optical lattices

Currently, in quantum optics ultra-cold atoms serve as quantum simulators for concepts developed in condensed matter theory, such as the Bose-Hubbard model or the Tonks- Girardeau gas. Recent developments include atomic analogues of a single electron transistor or an electronic quantum dot. The goal of the present project is to work out theoretical schemes, using methods developed in condensed-matter theory, for generating multiparticle quantum correlations in quantum optical systems, namely in optical lattices and multi-well systems. The first part of the project consists in designing a periodically emitting source of single cold atoms using a series of atomic quantum dots to outcouple atoms from a Bose-Einstein condensate, a concept inspired by the single electron shuttle. The focus of the second part of the project will be to develop experimentally feasible strategies to generate mesoscopic superpositions of condensates. This project will be carried out in Professor C. Cohen-Tannoudji s Cold Atoms Group (now officially led by Jean Dalibard and Christophe Salomon) at the ENS in Paris. It will be pursued in collaboration with the head of the theory group, Dr. Y. Castin, in close interaction with the experimentalists of the group.
