In this project we will investigate the underlying physical processes of thermal and current-induced magnetization reversal in antiferromagnetic nanoparticles. Towards this goal we will start with studies of thermally induced switching events and their dependence on parameters such as particles size and sample temperature. After determining the blocking temperature, we will experimentally observe to what extend the switching rate of nanoparticles is modified by very high tunneling currents up to several micro-Ampere. Particular attention will be paid to the potential influence of structural properties and defects, such as the shape of islands, kinks, and adsorbates. Finally, in the third year we will investigate if the current-induced spin-torque can be intentionally modified and maximized by atomic manipulation of magnetic and non-magnetic adatoms, which can be used to create quantum resonators in nano-sized objects.
