Spin-resolved electonic properties of strongly correlated one-dimensional systems

We will study the local electronic and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional (quasi- 1D) nanowires or even single-atomic chains of heavy elements that form as a result of self-organization processes on terraced semiconductor and low-index metal surfaces. Investigations will be performed by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and derived spectroscopic techniques at the atomic scale and with an energy resolution well below one millielectronvolt (meV). These methods are ideally suited to verify and investigate the spin-order phenomena which were theoretically predicted for numerous of these strongly spin-orbit coupled one dimensional systems, and give access to density of states effects and scattering phenomena in both, reciprocal and real space. In particular, we will scrutinize the impact of defects and finite-size effects caused by either an imperfect sample structure or intentionally induced by deliberate manipulation on the atomic scale
