The primary goal of the project is to incorporate highly active ultra-small metal and metal alloy clusters inside the pores of framework materials, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) or covalent organic frameworks (COFs), using the following two approachesa) Solvated metal atom impregnation approach (SMAI): can be achieved by judicious trapping of in-situ generated solvated metal atoms inside pores of frameworks using solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method. b) Seed and growth approach (SAGA): can be achieved by growing MOFs around SMAD synthesized colloidal metal nanoparticles.The generality of the SMAD method for SMAI and SAGA allows incorporation of a wide range of clusters (metals including main group, transition, and rare earth, alloys and semiconductors) inside porous frameworks.The primary goal of the project is the evaluation of the two approaches for metal-MOF materials fabrication including microstructure characterization of the target materials. The long term perspective is to combine these two approaches to obtain metal-MOF and metal-COF hybrid materials and develop new concepts for fabrication of nano catalysts for a wide variety of applications. We will primarily focus on MOFs, however, we will evaluate SMAI for COFs, too.
