The magnetic bearing drives are involved in high speed applications (e.g. Microturbines, Turbomolecular pumps etc.) or applications where a high purity environment is required (e.g. drives for the semiconductor industry). Todays research on electrical high-speed drives is focusing on the so called bearingless motor as a solution for compact, reliable and maintenance-free electrical motors. At the Institute for Electrical Energy Conversion, a research on a new motor design of this type is in progress. It is composed of only two conical permanent magnet synchronous motors as active part. The five-axis control is performed through four standard three-phase inverters.A specific control and specific inverters are necessary for this motor drive and will be part of this research project at the Institute. The project will also focus on the modeling of the geometric and magnetic couplings, the characterization and compensation of the shaft unbalance.
