To comprehensively understand how epithelial intercellular junctions function as signaling hubs requires a close interaction and communication among participating groups at several levels: 1. Scientific exchange of latest developments, findings and hypotheses through organization e.g. of workshops, seminars as well as national/international meetings and exchange of trainees. 2. Exchange of technical expertise as well as use of model systems through organization of workshops, access to key protocols and data, provision of cells and model organisms such as mice as well as additional experimental tools. 3. Coordination of general activities and network exchange as well as financial management of these general activities, in particular administration of travel costs of junior scientists to attend the different priority programme activities.During the first funding period, is has turned out that financial and logistic support of regular retreats, national/international meetings in addition to lab exchanges among collaborating groups has the highest priority for efficiently advancing projects and ideas. Further, building and updating the website has been important as an exchange platform among SPP members and external colleagues interested into the research topics of the SPP. Based on this experience, we will focus on further developing these instruments during the second funding period.
